How I Teach My Students to Study for Math Tests (Instead of Just Telling Them to “Study”)

One of the most challenging questions students ask is:

“How do I study for math?”

It sounds like a simple question, but learning how to study for math is actually a skill. And like any other skill, it has to be taught and practiced, especially for students who do not find math easy.

For years, I have changed my in-class test review practice over and over again, trying to find a system that would be productive and beneficial for as many students as possible.

I have tried several different approaches. Some were fun. Some were easy to implement. Some gave students extra practice.

But eventually, I had to ask myself an important question:

How can I get the most out of the limited review time I have with my students?

That question completely changed how I approach test review days.

When Checking Answers Isn't Enough

I used to give students a test review and then have them check their answers.

They would mark their papers:

✔ Right
✘ Wrong
✔ Right
✘ Wrong

And honestly? That often felt like a waste of valuable class time.

Knowing that an answer is wrong does not automatically help a student understand why it is wrong.

Students could finish checking their answers without ever correcting their mistakes, identifying what they misunderstood, or practicing the skill again.

They knew whether they got the answer right or wrong, but they did not necessarily learn anything new.

I Tried Making Review More Fun

Next, we played class games to check answers.

The students enjoyed it, and it definitely made review day more engaging.

But after using that strategy for a while, I realized something.

Fun does not always equal productive.

Students were excited about the game, but I was not convinced they were learning as much as they could from the review process.

Then I tried another approach.

More Problems Didn't Solve the Problem

I created additional practice assignments.

This was better in some ways because students were getting more opportunities to practice.

But there was still a problem.

I was giving everyone more problems - even though students had very different needs.

Some students needed to review basic skills. Others were struggling with one specific topic. Other students understood everything on the review and needed a challenge.

Giving everyone the exact same practice did not make the best use of our limited class time.

And even more importantly:

More problems do not automatically mean more learning.

Students can complete an entire page of practice problems without really understanding what they are doing.

That was when I decided to sit back and rethink my entire review process.

Creating a More Purposeful Test Review System

I wanted my students to spend their review time working on the things they actually needed to practice.

So now, my test reviews are computer-based assessments that are self-grading.

Before our review day, students complete the assessment and receive individual feedback about their performance.

When they come into class on review day, they do not simply start working through another worksheet.

They have a plan.

Task 1: Check Your Results and Make Corrections

The first task is simple:

Check your grade on the test review and make corrections to the problems you missed.

This step is important because students begin by looking at their own data.

Instead of guessing what they should study, they can see where they struggled.

Maybe a student missed several literal equation problems.

That student now has valuable information:

Literal equations are probably a skill I need to practice.

Another student may have performed well overall but struggled with one particular type of problem.

Again, the data helps guide their next step.

Students are learning to ask:

  • What did I miss?

  • Why did I miss it?

  • Do I understand how to correct it?

  • What type of problem do I need to practice?

  • What should I focus on next?

Task 2: Choose Your Own Review Adventure

After making corrections, students use their individual data to decide where they need to focus.

For each assessment, I create three to five review stations, depending on the number of topics covered on the test.

Each station focuses on a different skill or concept.

For example, if a student missed most of the literal equation problems on the review, that might be the first station they choose.

Another student who performed very well on the review may choose a station with the most challenging problems.

This creates a little bit of a choose-your-own-adventure review experience.

Students have choices, but their choices are guided by what they actually need.

Each station includes:

  • A few examples or reminders

  • Practice problems

  • Opportunities to apply the skill

  • A chance to check their work

I leave an answer key in the back of the room so students can check their work independently.

But the goal is not simply to find out whether they are right or wrong.

The goal is to help students identify mistakes, make corrections, and continue practicing.

The Missing Piece: Teaching Students How to Study

As I continued developing my review system, I realized something important.

Even with review stations, examples, practice problems, and individual data, many students still needed guidance.

They needed to learn:

How do I actually study for math?

Many students think studying means reading their notes or completing as many practice problems as possible.

But effective math studying can look different depending on what a student needs.

Sometimes students need to:

  • Review their notes

  • Correct mistakes

  • Rework missed homework problems

  • Watch a video explaining a difficult concept

  • Look up vocabulary they do not understand

  • Write the steps for solving a problem

  • Explain their thinking

  • Practice without looking at notes

  • Teach someone else how to solve a problem

Students need options.

More importantly, they need to learn how to choose the option that will help them the most.

A Student Guide to Studying for Math

That realization led me to create a one-page guide to help students learn how to study for math tests and quizzes.

The goal is simple:

Give students a clear plan instead of simply telling them to “go study.”

The guide helps students think through three important questions:

What Resources Do I Have?

Students start by identifying the resources available to them.

Sometimes students do not study simply because they do not know where to begin.

Helping them identify the resources they already have can make that first step much easier.

What Questions Should I Ask Myself?

The guide also includes prompts to help students reflect on their understanding.

These questions help students move from:

“I need to study everything.”

to:

“I need to practice this specific skill.”

That is a much more productive way to use their study time.

What Can I Actually Do to Study?

The final section gives students practical study strategies.

Instead of simply completing another page of problems, students can choose meaningful ways to learn and review.

The goal is to help students become more active learners.

Making It a Tool Students Can Use Again and Again

One of my favorite things about this resource is that it does not have to be used only once.

The one-page guide can be:

  • Printed and laminated

  • Placed inside a page protector

  • Kept in a student binder

  • Added to an interactive notebook

  • Used digitally

Students can check off the strategies they have completed each time they prepare for a test or quiz.

Over time, my hope is that students begin to recognize which study strategies work best for them.

Eventually, they may not need the checklist at all.

They will have developed a process for studying independently.

Studying for Math Is a Skill

We spend a lot of time teaching students what they need to learn in math.

But sometimes we forget to teach them how to learn it independently.

Studying for math does not come naturally to every student.

And for students who struggle with math, being told to “study more” can feel frustrating when they do not know what studying should actually look like.

By giving students a process, options, and questions to guide their thinking, we can help make studying feel less overwhelming.

My hope is that this resource gives students a tool they can use not only for their next quiz or test, but throughout the rest of their math career.

Because one of the most valuable things we can teach our students is not simply how to solve today's math problem.

It is how to recognize what they do not understand, find the resources they need, and take meaningful steps toward learning it.

And that is a skill they can use far beyond the math classroom.
